TNS figures demonstrate solid market growth in grocery

The Grocery market in the UK still shows robust growth as the latest retailer market share data is released by market analyst firm TNS.

TNS has reported solid UK grocery market growth of 5.8% over the 12 weeks ending 22 March 2009. Grocery price inflation also showed signs of growth since the last TNS measure, climbing to 9.3% from 8.7% four weeks earlier.

Within individual retailers, Asda recorded a record market share figure of 17.5%, the retailer's comparable figure last year stood at 17.1%. Growth in sales value at Asda was 8.5%, leading the way within the major multiples. Morrisons again delivered a strong performance, with sales growing by 7.2% and market share coming in at 11.8%. This growth rate was ahead of both Sainsbury's (5.7%) and Tesco (4.3%). The performance from the discounters and frozen specialists was again strong, with Aldi registering 16.3% growth and Farm Foods posting 19.5%.
